Kogarah City Council's Library Services

(This post is a response to Investigative Exercise 9 Community Profiles )

Kogarah is named from an Aboriginal word meaning "place of reeds".  Kogarah City is located in the southern suburbs of Sydney, about 15 kilometres from the Sydney GPO. Kogarah City is bounded by Hurstville City in the north-west and west, Rockdale City in the north-east and east and the Georges River in the south.

The Kogarah City area is predominantly residential, with some commercial and industrial areas. Kogarah City encompasses a total land area of about 20 square kilometres, including waterways and large areas of open space, mainly along the Georges River.

According to the data of 2006 Census, Kogarah Council has a
population of 53,000, among which, about 37.4% of the population was born overseas, and 32.5% were from a non-English speaking background, compared with 31.8% and 24.0% respectively for the Sydney Statistical Division.  The dominant non-English speaking country of birth in Kogarah City was China, where 10.0% of the population, or 5,265 people, were born.

Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre

The Kogarah Kogarah Library and Cultural Centre is a community place providing library service, orgnising events and exhibitions, displaying coummnity art, and helping student study and coummunity's family history and local studies.

One of the key programs in the Cultural Centre is Council's Community Art Space Program. The program is an initiative of Council, where local artists and groups are able to exhibit their works free of charge in a gallery area at the entrance to the Library and Cultural Centre. Opportunities for artists to exhibit their works are often costly and hard to come by, so through the Community Art Space Program, Council wanted to provide opportunities for local artists and groups to exhibit their works and showcase the wide-ranging talent in the City of Kogarah community.  Furthermore, the Cultural Centre Space hosts exhibits as well as a range of activities including musicians, authors, speakers and group activities for various groups within the community.
